I work directly with the CEO, development team, executive leadership, and, when appropriate, the board to strengthen strategy, revenue performance, team execution, systems, accountability, and organizational alignment. The difference is not simply the number of hours worked. It is the level of leadership and responsibility brought to the organization.

A consultant typically assesses a challenge, provides recommendations, or completes a defined project. My role is more embedded. I help set direction, make strategic decisions, lead and support the development team, work with the CEO and board, build systems and accountability, and remain involved as strategy moves into execution. I do not simply tell your organization what it should do. I help your team do it.

Does a Fractional CDO replace a full-time Chief Development Officer?

Not necessarily. For some organizations, fractional leadership is the right ongoing model. For others, it provides experienced leadership while the organization grows, strengthens its development function, navigates a transition, or prepares to hire the right full-time executive. Part of my role may be helping the organization determine what its long-term development leadership structure should look like.

What size organizations do you typically work with?

My work is generally best suited for established nonprofit organizations that have meaningful revenue, an existing development function or significant growth opportunity, and a need for experienced executive leadership. Many organizations I work with or am best positioned to support fall roughly within the $2 million to $15 million annual revenue range, but organizational complexity, opportunity, leadership needs, and readiness matter more than a specific revenue number.

Yes. Much of the work can be done effectively through a combination of virtual executive leadership and strategically planned in-person engagement when appropriate. The right structure depends on the organization, leadership team, and nature of the work.

I can provide executive leadership across the full development function, including major gifts; individual giving; annual giving; monthly and recurring giving; grants and foundation funding; corporate partnerships and sponsorships; capital and comprehensive campaigns; revenue diversification; donor acquisition, cultivation, stewardship, and retention; development team leadership; board fundraising and development committees; pipeline and moves management; revenue forecasting; development systems and accountability; and alignment among fundraising, marketing, and communications. The right strategy is different for every organization. My role is not to force every organization into the same fundraising model, but to determine where the strongest opportunities exist and build the leadership, strategy, and execution required around them.

Do you actually help execute the strategy?

Absolutely. That is one of the most important differences in how I work. I do not simply develop a strategy, hand you a presentation, and leave your team to figure out how to implement it. I stay engaged and work alongside the CEO and development team to help turn the strategy into action. Depending on the organization, that may mean helping build the pipeline and forecasting systems, developing outreach strategies, strengthening major gift or corporate opportunities, reviewing grants and proposals, preparing for important donor or prospect conversations, helping launch or improve individual and monthly giving programs, supporting campaign strategy, integrating AI into development workflows, working through stalled opportunities, and creating greater accountability around execution. I operate at the executive level, but I am willing to roll up my sleeves and get into the work when that is what it takes to move the organization forward. My role is not to replace your team or perform every day-to-day fundraising task. It is to lead, work alongside them, remove barriers, strengthen execution, and help build the systems, skills, and discipline that produce results. Strategy matters. Execution is what produces results. I help with both.

Do you manage the development team?

When appropriate, yes. As a Fractional CDO, I can provide executive leadership to the development function, including helping clarify roles, establish priorities, strengthen performance, coach team members, improve accountability, and align the team's work with organizational revenue goals. The exact reporting and leadership structure is determined with the CEO based on the organization's needs.

My primary role is as a Fractional Chief Development Officer, but my executive experience extends deeply into marketing, communications, brand strategy, organizational positioning, digital engagement, and audience development. I have led these functions and have also led comprehensive brand refresh initiatives for multiple national nonprofit organizations. That matters because development does not operate in isolation. How an organization positions itself, tells its story, builds its brand, reaches new audiences, communicates its impact, and engages constituents directly affects its ability to build relationships and generate revenue. I can help leadership strengthen the alignment among development, marketing, communications, and brand so these functions reinforce one another rather than operate in separate silos. The goal is not to turn a Fractional CDO engagement into an outsourced marketing agency. It is to ensure that the functions influencing growth are working together around a clear strategy—and that the organization can actually execute that strategy.

I help organizations identify where artificial intelligence can meaningfully improve the development operation and design practical ways to integrate it into existing workflows. Potential applications may include prospect research, meeting preparation, outreach, personalization, opportunity identification, grants and proposals, knowledge management, workflow efficiency, and reducing repetitive administrative work. AI should not be another disconnected tool. It should solve a real problem or improve a real workflow.

No. Fundraising remains fundamentally human. Relationships, trust, judgment, empathy, and authentic connection cannot—and should not—be automated. I view AI as a way to help good development professionals become better informed, better prepared, and more efficient so they can spend more time on the work that requires human relationships and judgment.

Yes. Not every workflow needs AI, and adopting technology without a clear use case often creates more complexity rather than less. From there, we establish priorities, clarify responsibilities, build the strategy and infrastructure required, and create a cadence for execution and accountability. The work is designed to integrate with the organization rather than operate as a separate consulting project.
